Declare Your Independence Metaspiritually-Header

How to Celebrate Your Independence ...

from a MetaSpiritual perspective

Reflecting on what it means to "Declare Your Independence," here are some examples to consider:

  • On July 4, 1776 America declared its independence from British rule.
  • On July 9, 1816 Argentina declared its independence from Spain.
  • Peru declared its independence from Spain on July 28, 1821.
  • After the signing of the Treaty of Velasco Texas declared its independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836.
  • In India Independence Day is celebrated on August 15th to commemorate its independence from British rule in 1947.
  • Israel declared its independence from the British Mandate of Palestine on May 14, 1948.
  • On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Louise McCauley Parks declared her independence from having to sit in the back of the bus.
  • On July 20, 1969 the human race declared its independence from the confines of the earth when Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon.
  • In September of 1997 Aimee Mullins freed herself from the limitations of being a double amputee below her knees by wearing Cheetah carbon-fiber sprinting legs when she competed in the Atlanta Paralympics.
  • Each year millions of Americans declare their independence from consuming alcohol, from smoking, from unwanted pounds, from abusive relationships, and from organized religion.

The independence we’re inviting you to champion is to declare your independence from anything that limits your spiritual growth. That means freeing yourself from:

  • The world of negatively-charged outer appearances;
  • Over-consumptive material appetites;
  • The belief in an anthropomorphic ‘God in the sky’ who rewards the faithful and punishes ‘sinners’;
  • Self-negating thoughts, assumptions of unworthiness, and error beliefs that spring from embedded theology;
  • Grudges, old stories, unforgiveness, and unrealistic comparisons;
  • Worry, fear, and doubt ...
  • and anything that boxes you in and keeps you stuck in the cul-de-sac of limitation.

The questions which beg to be asked for all of us are:

  • Will we choose freedom or enslavement?
  • Will we cling white-knuckled to stale religious theologies or loosen our dependence on religious perspectives which limit our spiritual growth?

Because we have lived with several Zen masters —one of them was a beagle basset named Cleo and the other was a toy poodle named Cinnamon—we thought we’d amplify that statement with some of the wisdom we’ve learned from them:

  • Better to bark less and wag more.
  • Better to greet you with outrageous joy than hold on to grudges.
  • Better to live in the moment than fret about the past or future.

    Here are some more “Betters” we believe in, to help us declare our independence:

    • Better to seek spiritual truths than be dumbed-down by religious fiction.
    • Better to question unquestioned answers than be mindlessly complacent. (We’ve found that our – your – spiritual growth, happiness, health and prosperity aren’t so much limited by unanswered questions, as they are unquestioned answers!)
    • Better to step out on faith than remain fearful and paralyzed. (Spiritual practices are ‘surge protectors.’ They help protect us from fear, illness and complacency.)
    • Better to be in a spiritual minority than a religious majority.
    • Better to bring the poise of our Divine Nature to the noise of life circumstances.
    • Better to ‘up our consciousness’ than downplay our innate Divinity.
    • Better to be Zenful than consider ourselves ‘sinful.’
    • Better to have heart-to-head resuscitation than head-to-heart malnutrition.
