Celebrate Soulful Kindness

Kindness is always an excellent quality to nurture – but this week gives us a reason to focus on it! The week of August 25th is National Be Kind to Humankind (BKTHK) week. The annual observance began in 1988 and encourages acts of kindness, compassion, generosity, and forgiveness. We’d like to dive even deeper (or should we say, soar even higher!) by practicing what we call “Soulful Kindness.” This is an opportunity to delve into the very essence of our shared human experience through a spiritual lens. Kindness, in its purest form, transcends the superficial. It’s a recognition of the interconnectedness of all beings, a gentle acknowledgment of the divine spark that resides within each of us.

From a spiritual perspective, practicing kindness is an active form of love in action. It’s about seeing beyond our differences, acknowledging our common vulnerabilities, and extending compassion without expectation of return. When we choose kindness, we not only uplift others, but also nourish our own souls, fostering a deeper sense of peace and purpose.

Let's explore some ways each of us can put our Soulful Kindness into action -- not just this week, but every week:

Let's Start with a 7-Day Challenge (that you can repeat every week!)

How can we consciously embrace Be Kind to Humankind Week with a spiritual focus? We thought a daily challenge would be a fun way to embrace the BKTHK week from a MetaSpiritual perspective, and help you keep your focus on the meaning behind the theme. So get ready to jump in and Be Soulfully Kind!

We've identified a name for each day that clues you in on what you'll be doing. We also recommend you keep a journal, and track the impact this focus on Soulful Kindness is having for you -- both as a giver and a receiver! We also recommend you scroll down to the end of this post to see our Spiritual Practice: The Kindness Harvest. Use it in conjunction with the 7-day challenge, and let us know what you experience!

  • Mindful Monday: Practice being fully present. When you're speaking with someone, turn off your inner monologue and truly listen, seeing the divine light and life in their eyes.
  • Thoughtful Tuesday: Send a heartfelt message or card to someone you appreciate. Let them know why they are a gift in your life, and reflect on the interconnected web of support that sustains us all.
  • Welcoming Wednesday: Intentionally extend a hand of welcome to a stranger or someone you don't know well. A warm greeting or a genuine smile can bridge the gaps between us and affirm our shared humanity.
  • Thankful Thursday: Express gratitude. Acknowledge the little acts of kindness you receive throughout the day, whether it's the barista who smiled at you or the person who held the door open. Every act of kindness is a ripple in the universe.
  • Forgiving Friday: Release a grudge, big or small. Forgiving another is a powerful act of self-love that frees your spirit. Forgiving yourself for a past mistake is just as important—it’s an act of kindness to your own soul.
  • Self/self-care Saturday: Take time to be kind to yourself. Engage in activities that nurture your soul, whether it’s reading a book, meditating, or enjoying a hobby you love.
  • Soulful Sunday: Take time for quiet reflection. Spend time in nature, meditate, or simply sit in silence, connecting with the loving-kindness within your own heart. This is how we recharge our capacity to give to others.

Be Kind to Humankind Week offers a gentle reminder that our spiritual journey is deeply intertwined with how we treat one another. By consciously choosing kindness, we not only make the world a brighter place but also deepen our own connection to the divine and to the beautiful tapestry of human existence we share. Let this week be a stepping stone towards a more compassionate and spiritually enriched way of being, not just for a few days, but as a continuous practice in our lives.

Other Actions You Can Take Every Day to Practice Soulful Kindness

In addition to our intentional focus created by the 7-day challenge, there are lots of other ways to ensure the journey of soulful kindness continues. The goal is for this to become a way of life, a gentle thread woven into the fabric of our everyday moments. Beyond the scheduled actions, there are countless small, simple ways we can continue to practice seeing the Divine in others and share the light within ourselves. These are not grand gestures, but quiet acts of compassion that can shift the energy of our day and create a ripple effect of positivity in the world.

Here are a few more simple things we can do (and we encourage you to add your own to the list!):

Practice Compassionate Patience.

Whether you are behind a slow driver, waiting in a long line, taking a nap while placed on hold, or experiencing the irritation of technology taking much longer than expected, we invite you to take a deep breath and consciously choose patience over frustration. Remind yourself that everyone is on their own journey, facing their own challenges. Offering a moment of grace to a hurried soul is a beautiful act of silent kindness. By the way, extend this act of patient grace to yourself as well!

Take Time to Really SEE People.

When interacting with service workers—the grocery store cashier, the person delivering your mail, your bank teller, or a restaurant server—make a point to look them in the eye and offer a genuine, heartfelt "thank you." A simple act of acknowledging their humanity and hard work can be a small but powerful blessing.

Offer a Heartfelt, Sincere Compliment.

Look for something specific to admire in someone, whether it's their resilience, creativity, or the light in their smile. A sincere compliment is a gift of energy that can uplift a spirit and connect two hearts, affirming the unique beauty of the other person. The more specific the compliment, the better! (For example, while the phrase "You're doing a great job!" is definitely nice to hear, image the impact of saying, "Wow! The way you were able to understand my issue and find such a perfect solution, in the midst of everything that's going on around you, is amazing! I am so grateful for the way you took your time to work with me!"

Bless the Food You Eat -- In a Special Way.

Before you begin a meal, take a moment of silent gratitude for everyone and everything involved in that food becoming your meal: the natural word, the labor of those who grew, harvested, and processed ingredients, the transportation networks, the plants and animals who sacrificed life to provide sustenance for you, those who prepared the food, those who serve it, and those with whom you may be sharing a meal. ultimately linking back to the energy and power of the sun and rain, and the minerals of the earth.  You can express this gratitude by simply pausing to appreciate the sustenance and the journey of the food to your table. 

Go the Extra Mile for Someone in Need.

Show others you care. For example, if you know someone who is unable to leave the house, offer to run errands or pick up groceries. Then stay for a visit. Friends with limited mobility enjoy offers of companionship for a walk in the fresh air. An offer to take care of someone's children so they have some time off can be a priceless gift! Paying for someone's groceries, or just letting someone in front of you in the check-out line is a heart-lifter.

Some Fun Metaphors to Remind You of Soulful Kindness

As we move towards making Soulful Kindness a way of being, use the following metaphors as ways to solidify the concept into your consciousness! What other metaphors can you think of, to reinforce your focus on Soulful Kindness?

  • The Ripple Effect Meditation: Imagine kindness as a pebble dropped into a pond, creating ripples that extend far beyond the initial splash. Spend a few minutes each day visualizing the ripples of your kind actions spreading out into the world. This can be a calming and centering practice.
  • The Gratitude Garden: Plant seeds of gratitude by writing thank-you notes to people who have impacted your life. Think of each note as a seed that will grow into a beautiful flower of connection and appreciation. [Bonus points for using plantable seed paper!]
  • The Humor Hug: Share a laugh with someone who needs it. Humor is a universal language that can bridge gaps and lighten hearts. Tell a funny story, share a joke, or watch a comedy together. Laughter is like a hug for the soul.
  • The Kindness Kaleidoscope: View the world through a lens of kindness. Each day, consciously look for acts of kindness around you, no matter how small. Share these observations with your group, creating a kaleidoscope of kindness that reflects the beauty of human connection, and constantly realigns how you are seeing the world.
  • The Kindness Cookbook: Cook a meal with love, as you think of each ingredient as a metaphor for kindness—spices for excitement, salt for wisdom, and sweetness for joy. Use this idea for a great conversation as you share your meal with someone.

  • Envision kindness as a bountiful harvest that you gather at the end of each day!In the evening, spend some quality time reflecting on the acts of kindness you’ve experienced – either as a giver or a receiver – throughout the day.
  • Allow yourself to feel gratitude for each item you recall, acknowledging the abundance of kindness in your life.
  • Set an intention for the next day, to be mindfully aware of opportunities to demonstrate kindness.
